I have been posting lots of fight related things recently and will likely ruin your eyes with more in the lead up to a certain big event on New Year’s Eve. UBEREEEEEEEM – pardon me. So I have decided to take a break from violence, as we modern gentlemen occasionally do, and slacken my clenched fists long enough to appreciate some art. Enter my 7th favourite Belgian, René Magritte and his lovely pipe, which isn’t a pipe, even though it is.
Magritte justified the caption he wrote below the pipe “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”) by explaining that the painting is not a pipe, it is an image of a pipe. It does not “satisfy emotionally”.
When Magritte once was asked about this image, he replied that “of course it was not a pipe, just try to fill it with tobacco”.
