For this weeks “Fighter of the week” I have decided to choose the man who defeated last weeks pick (thus solidifying TwizzyBoy’s status as MMA’s grim reaper). Stefan Struve beat Pat Barry at UFC Live last Friday with a very impressive triangle arm bar, which every BJJ practitioner in the world would have seen coming when Barry picked him up to try to slam out of a triangle.
An absolute man-giant, the 6ft 11 Dutchman is the tallest fighter ever to compete in the UFC. And at only 23 years old, Struve is one of the biggest prospects in the heavyweight division. Despite his young age Struve has amassed an impressive record of 22 wins and 5 losses, and has gone 6-3 since signing with the UFC in late 2008. His only losses in the organisation have been against Junior Dos Santos (who fights Cain Velasquez for the UFC heavyweight title in November), Roy Nelson, and Travis Browne, and following each loss Stefan has come back looking greatly improved. It’s pretty scary to think how good he’s going to be by the time he’s 30. He has already shown cojones beyond his years in his come behind victory of Dennis Stojnic, who he tapped with a rear naked choke after getting cut pretty badly from hammer fists in the first round.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Struve. Especially with the introduction of fellow Dutch mammoth Alistair Overeem, there are tons of hugely exciting potential match ups in the UFC heavyweight division.
Here’s a highlight video to keep you going until his next fight.
